Dental Bonding Atlanta, Marietta, RoswellAn Easy Way to Fix Cosmetic Flaws in the Teeth

Small flaws in the teeth can put a damper on your smile and your confidence in social and professional settings. Porcelain veneers and crowns may mask these imperfections in a natural-looking and feeling way; however, they require a greater commitment as the treatment process is irreversible. If you’re not ready to take the plunge with a restoration such as a crown or veneer, dental bonding has proven to be an excellent alternative. The Atlanta offices of Towne Lake Family Dentistry offer consultations to discuss whether dental bonding, also known as composite bonding, may be an appropriate solution for your needs. Please contact our dental practice today to schedule an appointment with our personable and professional team.

About Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is one of several cosmetic dentistry options offered at Towne Lake Family Dentistry. Once applied, the bonding material can cover flaws like small chips or cracks, close small spaces between teeth, and also alter the size and shape of teeth that do not match their neighboring teeth. Bonding is usually intended to be a temporary solution as the patient transitions to a more permanent restoration such as a veneer or porcelain crown, though for superficial flaws is typically sufficient. Dr. Ray H. Morgan, Jr., and our dentists use composite resin materials for bonding procedures. Composite resins are plastic materials used to fill teeth and also repair structural defects in the teeth.

We will prepare your tooth for the bonding material by lightly scuffing it, making the surface a little rough so that the bond can better adhere to the tooth material. A special liquid is also spread on the tooth to help the bonding material adhere. Then, the bonding material is applied to the teeth and carefully sculpted to produce the desired shape and size. It will then be hardened with a special dental lamp to set it in place. Once the resin material has set, the tooth is polished so it blends in beautifully with your surrounding teeth.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a quick, simple, and mostly complication-free procedure. Once applied, the color, shape, texture, and form of the material makes the bonded teeth practically indistinguishable from the natural surrounding teeth. Composite resin is a strong material that has proven durable with the right care. Bonding does not require any reduction in the tooth structure like veneers or crowns do; instead, it leaves as much of the natural tooth intact as possible. The bonding procedure itself is virtually painless. It’s also a more cost-effective option than porcelain restorations.

Disadvantages of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is generally a safe and effective procedure. However, it does not provide permanent repair to chipped, cracked, or stained teeth. Dental bonding will not last as long as options such as porcelain veneers or crowns. If you have a flaw in your teeth that you would like permanently restored, you might want to speak with our dentists about a porcelain restoration. The composite resin bonding material is also more susceptible to wear and tear, chipping, and staining than porcelain is.
